The Cornish Shepherdess

Written by Zoë

We asked our resident shepherdess, Zoe, to write a little bit about her first year caring for the sheep at Treworgey.  Treworgey has had Jacob sheep for decades, but last year, Les retired after 40 years at Treworgey and handed the flock on to Zoe.

Here is a little window into Zoe's experiences with the sheep over the last 12 months:

I started last year with 12 ewes, and the flock has already grown to 29 (mostly Jacob’s) here at Treworgey. It’s been quite the adventure — full of lessons, worries, and a few surprises along the way! From the risks of fly strike and blue tongue to the usual foot problems, there’s always something new to learn about keeping them healthy and happy. With so much to learn I am getting most of my information, from instagram, knowledgeable friends and the Archers!

Sending off my first ten sheep earlier this year was harder than I expected, though we did get two back to enjoy the fruits of our labour — not that I can eat lamb myself! I couldn’t do any of it without the help of my family, and of course Tess, my aunt’s young trainee sheepdog, who brings plenty of enthusiasm (and mischief).

There’s never a dull moment with the flock. When they decide to go exploring, when a gate's been left open, Drover the ram always gives himself away — he’ll stand patiently by the gate waiting to be let back in, even if all his friends have run off down the road. He's such a gentle ram, its amazing I'm able to handle him so easily despite his considerable size.
